Engagement During Pandemic Teaching

In this panel, AI faculty with experience teaching online and blended classes were asked to share their experiences teaching online classes. The panel was composed of Ashok Goel, Georgia Institute of Technology, Ansaf Salleb-Aouissi, Columbia University and Mehran Sahami, Stanford University. The panelists were asked to describe which tools and methods work well to help instructors engage and bond with students online. They were furthermore asked to share their insights into which components of a course can be done best online and which ones are best accomplished in person. The panel took place as part of the 2021 Symposium on Educational Advances of AI, which was collocated with AAAI-21. The panel was attended by about 55 people and it included a vigorous Q/A portion.
Remembering Jaime Carbonell

Joining the incoming PhD class at Carnegie Mellon in the late 1980s, I was lucky to have incredible opportunities for faculty advisors and mentors in AI. Jaime Carbonell was among the more junior faculty, continuing the research that he started in his PhD combining natural language, planning, and machine learning.
AAAI-21 New Faculty Highlights: Call for Participation
This year, AAAI is launching a new invited speaker program highlighting AI researchers who have just begun careers as new faculty members or the equivalent in industry. Applications will be adjudicated by a committee consisting of the AAAI-21 chairs and a diverse group of AAAI Fellows.
AAAI Announces 2021 AAAI Squirrel AI Award for AI for the Benefit of Humanity

AAAI recently announced the new $1M AAAI Squirrel AI Award for AI for the Benefit of Humanity. The award recognizes positive impacts of AI to protect, enhance, and improve human life in meaningful ways with long-lived effects.

For our fifth AMA, we have Karen Myers, Ph.D. Dr. Myers is the Lab Director for SRI International’s Artificial Intelligence Center.
Dr. Myers’ research focuses on intelligent systems that facilitate man-machine collaboration. Her expertise includes autonomy, multi-agent systems, automated planning and scheduling, and intelligent assistants. She has led the development of several AI technologies that have been successfully transitioned into operational use in areas that span collaboration tools, task management, and end-user automation.
Dr. Myers has served on the Executive Council for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS). She was on the editorial boards for Artificial Intelligence and the Journal for AI Research and the advisory board for ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology. She is the conference chair for the Innovative Applications of AI conference for 2019. She was elected SRI Fellow in 2016.
Myers has a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University, a B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science from the University of Toronto, and a degree in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
