Report on the First and Second ICAPS Workshops on Hierarchical Planning

Hierarchical planning has attracted renewed interest in the last couple of years. As a consequence, the time was right to establish a workshop devoted entirely to hierarchical planning – an insight shared by many supporters. In this paper we report on the first ICAPS workshop on Hierarchical Planning held in Delft, The Netherlands, in 2018 as well as on the second workshop held in Berkeley, CA, USA, in 2019.
Remembering Nils Nilsson

“Hello! This is Nils Nilsson calling!!” Or so the booming voice on the other end of the line claimed, as I skeptically held the phone in my hand on a Sunday afternoon mid-way through my final semester as an undergraduate in Toronto. I had been in my dorm room preparing for a mid-term in my Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course, in fact reading through the textbook which Nils himself had authored.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and Squirrel AI Learning announced the establishment of a new $1M annual award for societal benefits of AI. The award will be sponsored by Squirrel AI Learning as part of its mission to promote the use of artificial intelligence with lasting positive effects for society. The new Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity was announced jointly by Derek Haoyang Li, Founder and Chairman of Squirrel AI Learning, and Yolanda Gil, President of AAAI, at the 2019 conference for AI for adaptive Education (AIAED) in Beijing.
Patrick Henry Winston: In Memoriam

“What do you say?” Patrick’s enunciated greeting would ring out, ritual-like, as I presented myself at the threshold to 32-251. His blond hair poking up from behind his monitor, I could hear in his voice whether he wore his characteristic wry smile. My visits were unscheduled: I would come over from my neighboring office when I saw his light on and door open. I spoke with him almost every work day for nearly twelve years, in conversations long and short, mostly about research: science, engineering, academics, artificial intelligence, cognition, or the latest paper or proposal we were writing.

For our fifth AMA, we have Karen Myers, Ph.D. Dr. Myers is the Lab Director for SRI International’s Artificial Intelligence Center.
Dr. Myers’ research focuses on intelligent systems that facilitate man-machine collaboration. Her expertise includes autonomy, multi-agent systems, automated planning and scheduling, and intelligent assistants. She has led the development of several AI technologies that have been successfully transitioned into operational use in areas that span collaboration tools, task management, and end-user automation.
Dr. Myers has served on the Executive Council for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS). She was on the editorial boards for Artificial Intelligence and the Journal for AI Research and the advisory board for ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology. She is the conference chair for the Innovative Applications of AI conference for 2019. She was elected SRI Fellow in 2016.
Myers has a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University, a B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science from the University of Toronto, and a degree in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
