At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering challenges related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.

As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we:

Discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for human-centered, robust, secure, and scalable mission capabilities

Prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities

Identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape

Position Summary: As Technical Director – Head of AI for Mission on our team, you will lead, shape, and direct our mission-focused, applied AI prototyping and development portfolio in support of critical U.S. government needs.



Technical Leadership and Portfolio Management: You have created, grown, and led advanced technology development initiatives and portfolios. You have mentored, managed, and led teams of technology designers and developers.

Defense and National Security Experience: You are familiar with the broad variety of missions across the defense and national security community and can identify opportunities to apply AI and related technologies for advanced mission capabilities. You are comfortable engaging with defense and national security stakeholders to strengthen existing relationships and to create and develop new opportunities.

Strong Technical Knowledge: You have performed and led extensive technology development work in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, data science, data engineering, or related fields. You have worked with modern tools, software, frameworks, and programming languages. You maintain awareness of new ideas and capabilities in AI related fields.

Technology Development: You have worked on and led projects through all phases of the technology development lifecycle. You have working knowledge of modern software and systems development processes and have successfully led teams to develop solutions through incremental and iterative approaches.

Design and User Engagement: You understand the importance and practice of involving users and stakeholders in design and development activities and the value of diverse teams.



Applied AI Engineering Leadership: You will develop, lead, and oversee a portfolio of projects focused on building AI prototypes and systems for defense and national security mission applications using leading engineering practices and modern AI technologies. You will inform the discipline of AI Engineering through experience in building AI systems.

Strategy: You will lead the process to plan, develop, and carry out an overall customer engagement and technology development strategy, and influence the direction and adoption of AI-enabled mission capabilities through prototype development and technology demonstrations.

Customer and Community Engagement: You will engage with customers and stakeholders. You will represent the SEI’s AI for Mission portfolio, regularly presenting our work at collaboration venues and to customers. You will build and maintain relationships with the DoD innovation and technology ecosystem including relevant engineering and research.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Communication and Collaboration: You are an exceptional communicator and can interact collaboratively and diplomatically with customers and colleagues at all levels of experience and knowledge. You grasp the big picture, direction, and goals of an effort while having the natural ability to dig into the details on problems and technical concepts and provide clear direction.

Creativity and Innovation: You are creative and curious, and you are inspired by the prospect of collaborating with premier researchers and visionaries at Carnegie Mellon University and other research- and innovation-focused organizations.

Knowledge and Learning: You possess broad technical interests along with deep knowledge and experience engineering and building systems in fields such as computer vision, data science and machine learning, advanced computing, autonomy, and artificial intelligence.
