SUMMARY:The 16th Annual AGI Conference (AGI-23)
DESCRIPTION:The notion of intelligence remains intriguing to researchers and practitioners\, yet still somewhat mysterious. After over a century of research into the topic\, there is still no widely accepted definition. Many say that intelligence is the ability to solve problems\, but exactly what problems do they have in mind? Is it the ability to collect reward in Markov decision processes\, determine truth in first-order arithmetic\, find patterns in progressive matrices\, or something else? Could it be argued that some problems are more natural than others in this context? \nAccording to evolutionary theory\, animal intelligence\, including human intelligence\, evolved in response to demands for problem-solving in nature. Moreover\, natural selection favors the genes of animals that can reproduce in a relatively broad class of ecosystems. To be able to reproduce\, animals must solve a continuous stream of problems during their lives\, e.g.\, finding food\, avoiding predators\, mating\, and parenting. This suggests that human intelligence primarily evolved for solving everyday problems related to survival in ecosystems ranging from the tropics to the polar regions. \nArtificial Intelligence started as an attempt to reproduce parts of human intelligence in machines and\, like the notion of intelligence\, it suffers from or enjoys a certain vagueness regarding its definition\, targeted problems\, performance measures\, and relations to neighboring research fields. \nToday\, AI researchers are increasingly focusing on generality. They build systems that can translate between many languages\, play many games\, manipulate many objects\, predict many video frames\, and diagnose many diseases. They design autonomous cars that can drive in many cities\, dialogue systems that can answer many questions\, and robots that can navigate many homes. They want their systems to learn quickly\, generalize well\, and never stop learning. \nAGI is AI with generality put at the center. Since 2008\, the Artificial General Intelligence Society has organized annual conferences on the topic. The 16th AGI conference (AGI-23)\, will be held as a mixed virtual/F2F event in Stockholm\, Sweden on June 16 – 19\, 2023. We look forward to welcoming you to the conference! \n\nConference UR: https://agi-conf.org/2023/\nSponsor: Artificial General Intelligence Society\nCo-sponsor: Cisco\nCo-sponsor: Digital Futures

SUMMARY:AAAI 2021 SPRING SYMPOSIUM SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence\nIn cooperation with the Stanford University Computer Science Department \nAAAI invites proposals for the 2021 Spring Symposium Series\, to be held Monday – Wednesday\, March 22–24 at Stanford University in Palo Alto\, California. The Spring Symposium Series is an annual set of meetings run in parallel at a common site. It is designed to bring colleagues together in an intimate forum while at the same time providing a significant gathering point for the AI community. The two and one-half day format of the series allows participants to devote considerably more time to feedback and discussion than typical one-day workshops. It is an ideal venue for bringing together new communities in emerging fields. \nThe symposia are intended to encourage presentation of speculative work and work in progress\, as well as completed work. Ample time should be scheduled for discussion. Novel programming\, including the use of target problems\, open-format panels\, working groups\, or breakout sessions\, is encouraged. Most participants of the symposia will be selected on the basis of statements of interest or abstracts submitted to the symposia chairs; some open registration will be allowed. All symposia are limited in size\, and participants will be expected to attend a single symposium.

SUMMARY:The Eighth AAAI Conference on Human Computation and Crowdsourcing (HCOMP 2020)
DESCRIPTION:The 8th AAAI Conference on Human Computation and Crowdsourcing (HCOMP 2020) will be held October 26–28th at The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum\, The Netherlands (may be converted to virtual format). \nHCOMP is the home of the human computation and crowdsourcing community. It’s the premier venue for presenting latest findings from research and practice into frameworks\, methods and systems that bring together people and machine intelligence to achieve better results. \nWhile artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction (HCI) represent traditional mainstays of the conference\, HCOMP believes strongly in fostering and promoting broad\, interdisciplinary research. Our field is particularly unique in the diversity of disciplines it draws upon and contributes to\, including human-centered qualitative studies and HCI design\, social computing\, artificial intelligence\, economics\, computational social science\, digital humanities\, policy\, and ethics. We promote the exchange of advances in human computation and crowdsourcing not only among researchers\, but also engineers and practitioners\, to encourage dialogue across disciplines and communities of practice. \nThis year\, we especially invite works that will generate new insights into the quality (or qualities) of human-annotated datasets\, including elements such as reliability and replicability of human computation and crowdsourcing experiments\, novel metrics for aggregation of results\, and holistic approaches to deal with bias\, fairness and interpretability. \nHCOMP 2020 builds on a successful history of past meetings: seven HCOMP conferences (2013–2019) and four earlier workshops\, held at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (2011–2012)\, and the ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (2009–2010). \n

SUMMARY:The Seventeenth Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
DESCRIPTION:the 17th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning to be held in Rhodes\, Greece on September 12-18\, 2020. \nKnowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR) is a well-established and lively field of research. In KR a fundamental assumption is that an agent’s knowledge is explicitly represented in a declarative form\, suitable for processing by dedicated reasoning engines. This assumption\, that much of what an agent deals with is knowledge-based\, is common in many modern intelligent systems. Consequently\, KR has contributed to the theory and practice of various areas in AI\, including automated planning and natural language understanding\, and to fields beyond AI\, including databases\, verification\, software engineering\, and robotics. In recent years\, KR has contributed also to new and emerging fields\, including the semantic web\, computational biology\, cyber security\, and the development of software agents. \nThe KR conference series is the leading forum for timely in-depth presentation of progress in the theory and principles underlying the representation and computational management of knowledge.

SUMMARY:The Fourteenth International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media
DESCRIPTION:ICWSM-20 will be held virtually June 8-11\, 2020.\n\n\nThe International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) is a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to come together to share knowledge\, discuss ideas\, exchange information\, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This overall theme includes research in new perspectives in social theories\, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media. ICWSM is a singularly fitting venue for research that blends social science and computational approaches to answer important and challenging questions about human social behavior through social media while advancing computational tools for vast and unstructured data. \nICWSM\, now in its fourteenth year\, has become one of the premier venues for computational social science\, and previous years of ICWSM have featured papers\, posters\, and demos that draw upon network science\, machine learning\, computational linguistics\, sociology\, communication\, and political science. The uniqueness of the venue and the quality of submissions have contributed to a fast growth of the conference\, and a competitive acceptance rate around 20% for full-length research papers published in the proceedings by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). \nFor ICWSM-2020\, in addition to the usual program of contributed talks\, posters and demos\, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks from prominent scientists and technologists. Building on successes in previous years\, ICWSM-2020 will also hold a day of workshops and tutorials in addition to the main conference.
